Flights into the capital city of Tegucigalpa fly into Toncontin airport. Flights can be arranged out of Orlando, Miami or Tampa, Florida. We decided to fly out of Miami since the cost of the tickets were significantly less expensive. A small group decided to drive to Miami the night before. The rest drove straight to Miami the morning of the flight. Travel days happened to be very long, however, worth while. You get to know your brothers and sisters very well.

It has been said that the runway at Toncontin airport in Tegucigalpa is the shortest runway in the world. It’s basically the flattened peak of a mountain. It is somewhat exciting to land and stop almost instantly. This is why they strongly suggest you wear your seat belt while landing. You literally slide forward off your seat!

We exchanged US Dollars over to Lempira at the airport with the exchange rate being 17.5 Lempira to the dollar.

It’s important to save some US Dollars for your deportation tax, which you will need to pay as you leave Honduras. The rate is about $27.00 per person. You could always change Lempiras back to Dollars at the airport the day of departure. Don’t be surprised it is a man standing right outside the airport terminal who makes the currency exchange.

Since our destination was Catacamas we had a hired bus driver who drove us in a school bus. The trip takes about 3 ½ to 4 hrs depending on the traffic and the cows on the roads.

There is a very quaint half way point called Guaymaca, which is a Mennonite settlement. It has a small general store with snacks and refreshments, restrooms and a gift shop. We found the restrooms to be clean, but with no toilet paper. We always carried tissues, alcohol wipes and hand sanitizer with us.
