La Escuela El Buen Samaritano

Twenty years ago a Honduran young man, Sabel Guifarro, came to the United States as an exchange student from Catacamas in the Olancho district of Honduras. His roommate, Rick Machen, taught him the word of God and Guifarro was converted. When he returned home, he shared with his family the truth about Jesus and they also became Christians. The Machen and Guifarro families grew close, and in 1980, Machen organized an evangelistic campaign in Catacamas.

As the church in Catacamas grew, Machen and others formed La Escuela Biblica Honduras (Honduras Bible School) for preacher and church leader training. When a child of one of the EBH students almost died of diarrhea and dehydration, the idea of combining healthcare training with preacher training was born, ultimately leading to the formation of the PREDISAN Healthcare Ministry. Soon after, more Christians visited Catacamas and created the Good Samaritan Grade School in 1985 to provide a Christian education for children from indigent families. Many poor children are unable to attend public school. because they cannot afford the uniforms and books, which public school requires in Honduras.

The walk to the School of the Good Samaritan from the Juan Carlos Hotel is about 1 1/2 miles.

The school building is simple, but very well designed. It is kept immaculate. They have a cleaning lady scheduled in the morning and afternoon. A different group of students are assigned each week to clean the school grounds after recess. This is part of the lessons in daily life. The teachers instill discipline in a loving way and the children are thrilled to be there. It will be maxed out next year with two shifts of two classes of each grade. The school director and teachers are Honduran.

Currently the school serves Pre-K through 6th grade and it is expected to be expanded through middle school. The school follows the state curriculum as well as the Honduran Education Department.

Every morning the students and teachers have a devotional. They read the scripture, pray and sing. They also go over the school rules and expected behavior. All the students are aware of the privilege of being in the school and are grateful for their sponsors. They are thrilled to see you visit the school and look forward to meet with you and play every day. They love when their sponsors write letters and are eager to know if you are acquainted with their personal sponsor.

The school year runs from February to November and is closed from mid November to January.

For only $300 a year a Honduran child can attend a Christian school. This money covers everything from the teacher’s salary to the school uniforms and supplies. For more information or to sponsor a child, contact us at the following address:
